With all of the information out there about additives and chemicals in toothpastes, I've started making my own. I started with the recipe from this site, and then tweaked it a little. The added cinnamon is definitely important when having kids use this, as it improves the flavor considerably. My kids took a few days to get used to it, but now they use it regularly without any fuss, and I am happy knowing our family is taking a step closer to being chemical free.
Ingredients:
1/2 cup Coconut Oil
2 Tablespoons Baking Soda
1 Teaspoon Xylitol (plant based sweetener) or you can use Stevia (I get mine in the bulk seasonings, herbs, etc area of my local health food store)
15 drops Peppermint Essential Oil
10 drops Grapefruit Seed Extract
1/4 teaspoon Cinnamon
Directions:
Melt the Coconut oil, then take off the heat.
Stir in the Baking Soda until it is dissolved and mixed well. I've found that if the baking soda isn't dissolved really well, then it will clump with the other ingredients and will affect the texture once it is cooled.
Stir in the remaining ingredients.
Let the mixture sit and cool, but be sure to stir occasionally. If you don't stir it, the baking soda with settle and separate.
Once the mixture has cooled enough that you feel it won't continue to separate, then you can transfer it to small glass containers. I keep small glass containers for each member of our house and label them accordingly.
To use, dip bristles of toothbrush into toothpaste. You don't need to coat the entire toothbrush in the toothpaste.... something I am still trying to teach my three year old. You just need a little bit on the bristles.
